Old Study

The initial session.

Therapy can evoke feelings of anxiety, and taking that initial step towards seeking help can be equally anxiety-inducing. Each psychotherapy session has a duration of 60 minutes. During the initial session, we engage in discussions aimed at collaboratively assessing the compatibility of our therapeutic approach. To better equip you for the first session, here are several topics that might be addressed during the intake process:

  • Limits of confidentiality

  • Informed consent, clinic policies and client/clinician boundaries

  • Clinician's credentials, education and work experience

  • Types of therapy, styles, interventions and approaches

  • Client's relevant health background

  • Support systems and safe people/places

  • Family dynamic and relationship history

  • Methods of self-care and emotional regulation

  • Presenting concerns and symptoms

  • Therapy goals

  • Frequency of sessions

  • Safety planning around self-harming, suicidality and abuse

  • Trauma history (whether its present/not, no disclosure of details)

  • Core values and beliefs

  • Religious or spiritual affiliations or sources of meaning making

  • Triggers

  • Referrals to other mental health professionals or specialists

  • Psychoeducational material

  • Strengths and qualities

  • Possible barriers to accessing goals
